The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the completion of emergency runway repairs.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had earlier reported that on April 18, 2025, a sudden and significant rupture occurred on the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, prompting the immediate closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airportfor safety reasons. According to FAAN, emergency repairs were scheduled to begin on April 22, 2025, with an initial reopening date set for May 6, 2025.
However, in a major development, FAAN confirmed that the rehabilitation works on the runway were completed ahead of schedule. After careful inspection and certification by engineers working closely with the Authority, the runway has now been cleared for landings and takeoffs, ensuring that the airport is once again ready to serve travelers safely and efficiently.

In an official statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the Authority expressed deep appreciation to all airport users, airlines, and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation throughout the period of closure. FAAN also sincerely apologized for the inconvenience caused by the shutdown but stressed that every action taken was motivated solely by a commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety.
