The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has taken action against eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for non-compliance with capping of estimated bills for unmetered customers. The affected companies are Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.
According to NERC, these DisCos failed to adhere to the monthly energy caps issued by the Commission for the period of July to September 2024. The Commission had previously established guidelines in Order No: NERC/197/2020 to ensure that estimated billing for customers without meters would closely match the measured usage of those with meters on the same supply feeder.

As a result of the investigation into the billing practices during this period, the DisCos have been fined a total of ₦628,031,583.94, which is 5% of the total amount they overbilled customers. Additionally, NERC has ordered these companies to provide appropriate credit adjustments to all affected customers by May 15, 2025, which corresponds with the end of the April 2025 billing cycle.
NERC reiterated its commitment to ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting consumer rights within the Nigerian electricity sector.
