NAFDAC Arrests Man for Producing Fake Alcohol in Rivers State

Officials caught Chidi inside a filthy shop, washing used bottles from different alcohol brands. He was refilling these bottles with unsafe drinks to sell again.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested a man named Anthony Chidi at Mile 3 Market in Diobu, Port Harcourt, for making fake alcoholic beverages in dirty conditions.

Officials caught Chidi inside a filthy shop, washing used bottles from different alcohol brands. He was refilling these bottles with unsafe drinks to sell again.

During the raid, NAFDAC officials found dirty empty bottles, ethanol, bottle caps, and packaging materials in the shop. Chidi confessed that he had been running this illegal business for about a year, getting labels from Aba and buying used bottles.

NAFDAC took away all the items found in the shop to investigate further.

The Dangers of Consuming Fake Alcohol.

The production and sale of fake alcohol not only undermine the integrity of legitimate businesses but also pose significant health risks to consumers.

Health Risks

Drinking fake alcohol can lead to severe health consequences. Many counterfeit beverages contain dangerous levels of toxic substances, such as methanol, which can cause poisoning. Symptoms of methanol poisoning include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, can result in blindness or even death. Unlike regulated products, fake alcohol often lacks quality control, further increasing the risk of harmful ingredients.
