President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to critics accusing his administration of pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state, saying no one is being forced to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He made this statement during the APC National Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu addressed concerns over the growing number of defections from other parties to the ruling APC. He described the APC as the only party actively driving the country’s development goals and said individuals have the right to freely choose their political affiliations.
“For those talking about a one-party system in Nigeria, I say this: it is one party ruling and driving the aspiration of Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “You don’t blame people for leaving a sinking ship when they have no life jackets.”
The One-party state in Nigeria debates have intensified in recent months following a wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, raising concerns about the future of political diversity in the country. However, Tinubu insisted that the APC’s growth is due to its appeal, not coercion.

He further stated, “Nobody can be forced to stay where they don’t want. If people want to join the APC, we are ready to welcome them. That’s the beauty of democracy—freedom of choice.”
The President also urged APC members to stay committed to the party’s goals and to be patient as opportunities unfold. He acknowledged that not everyone can be given political appointments immediately but encouraged loyalty and perseverance.
“They think this political party is a failure, but with your perseverance, we never gave up,” Tinubu said. “We are the Progressives. We will continue to work hard. I listen to you, not them.”
He added that Nigeria has a chance to lead Africa toward progress, but it would take unity, focus, and determination within the party to achieve that vision.
“To those I cannot offer political positions, be patient. You will be happy to belong to this party,” Tinubu assured.
The one-party state in Nigeria controversy remains a major point of political debate, but Tinubu’s message at the summit appears aimed at reassuring both APC members and the wider public that Nigeria’s democracy remains intact and inclusive.
