
The Supreme Court has invalidated the Rivers local government election held on October 5, 2024, by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) won by the All People’s Party APP..
In a ruling delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the court found that the election violated the Electoral Act in several significant ways. He stated that the actions of the RSIEC were declared void due to a lack of substantial compliance with electoral guidelines.

Specifically, the court noted that the commission continued voter registration even after announcing the election date, which contravened the established protocols.
Justice Tukur emphasized that the processes leading up to the Rivers local government election were flawed, clearly violating Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
