Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti revealed on Friday that she has faced harassment and discrimination because she refused to engage in an inappropriate relationship with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Akpoti made these allegations during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show.
She claimed that Akpabio has been making unwelcome advances toward her and accused him of blocking her motions in the Senate as a result. Recently, tensions arose between Akpoti and Akpabio over seating arrangements on the Senate floor.
While discussing her experiences, Akpoti said, “The Senate President made a mistake by not allowing me to speak on that Order 10.” She explained that when a senator invokes Order 10, it means their rights have been violated and they should be heard. However, she claimed that instead of allowing her to speak, Akpabio ordered her removal from the chamber.

Akpoti expressed that she has been “dehumanized” and “maligned” in the Senate, and believes this incident was the tipping point. She shared a troubling encounter with Akpabio from December 8, 2023, when he held her hand and made comments about spending time together. She felt uncomfortable and hesitated to tell her husband about the incident.
In February, Akpoti attempted to introduce a motion to investigate corruption at the Ajaokuta Steel Company. She said she tried to present the motion five times, but it was only approved on her sixth attempt. Akpabio allegedly told her that her motion could not be considered because “the good of the Senate does not accommodate it.” When she confronted him, he suggested that she could have more success if she made him happy.
Natasha Akpoti likened her situation to a student failing because they refuse to engage in inappropriate relationships with their teachers. She also mentioned a nightclub incident where Akpabio hinted at having fun together during travels, which she believes was not a mere slip of the tongue.
These serious allegations raise questions about the treatment of women in politics and the need for a respectful and professional environment in the Senate.
