Jonathan Warns Against One-Party State, Says It’s Dangerous for Nigeria’s Democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a strong warning against attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, describing it as harmful to the nation’s democratic development. Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a memorial lecture in honour of the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan said any move toward a one-party structure must be carefully considered, with clear goals and national interest in mind.

“There must be a well-planned process and a clearly projected outcome if any country is to practice a one-party system. Otherwise, any attempt motivated by selfish political ambitions will only damage the nation,” Jonathan stated.

His comments come amid growing concerns raised by opposition figures who argue that Nigeria is gradually sliding into a one-party state. These concerns have intensified following the wave of defections to the ruling party and weakening of opposition parties in recent times.

The former president urged the family of the late Edwin Clark to preserve his legacy by instituting an annual memorial lecture that promotes the ideals he stood for—a united, fair, and progressive Nigeria.

One-party state in Nigeria, according to Jonathan, would stifle political pluralism and reduce the democratic space necessary for good governance and accountability.

Also speaking at the event, Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening conditions. He lamented that the sacrifices of heroes like Pa Edwin Clark have been rendered ineffective by today’s poverty, insecurity, and the surging cost of living.

Obi said, “Our heroes laboured for a country that works for all, but today, that labour seems to be in vain.”

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the event, also emphasized the importance of national unity. He urged all Nigerians to put the nation above personal interests, insisting that a united and indivisible Nigeria remains the best path toward progress.

The remarks by these elder statesmen reflect a growing concern over Nigeria’s political direction and the health of its democracy, particularly as discussions around the one-party state in Nigeria continue to gain traction.

As the political landscape shifts, Nigerians are being reminded that the strength of democracy lies in the presence of strong institutions, vibrant opposition, and a citizenry committed to national unity. These elements, many believe, are crucial in preventing any drift toward a one-party state in Nigeria.
