Eight Lawmakers Dump PDP, Labour Party for APC and PDP Amid Internal Party Crises

Eight members of the House of Representatives have officially defected from their former political parties to new platforms, citing ongoing crises within their parties as the main reason for the switch. The defection letters were read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Six of the defecting lawmakers are from Delta State and have moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The remaining two members from Enugu State left the Labour Party (LP) to join the PDP.

Prominent among those who defected is Nicholas Mutu (Bomadi), the longest-serving House member from Delta State and a former PDP stalwart since 1999. He now joins the APC along with fellow Delta lawmakers Nnamdi Ezechi (Ndokwa/Nkwuani), Jonathan Okodiko (Isoko), Thomas Eriyetomi (Warri), Julius Pondi (Burutu), and Victor Nwokolo (Ika North and South).

From Enugu State, Mark Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) and Dennis Agbo (Igbo Eze North/Udenu) switched from the Labour Party to the PDP.

The lawmakers blamed their defections on unresolved leadership struggles and internal divisions in their former parties. Their move adds to the growing political realignments happening ahead of the next election cycle and deepens the party crisis in the House of Representatives, a development that may shift power balances.

Observers note that the party crisis in the House of Representatives has continued to influence political dynamics, with members increasingly seeking platforms they believe offer more stability and support for their political ambitions.
