Bafarawa Laments Decline of Patriotism Among Politicians, Warns of Danger to Nigeria’s Democracy

Former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Dalhatu Bafarawa, has raised alarm over what he sees as a dangerous decline in patriotism among Nigerian politicians. He warned that the growing trend of political self-interest could destroy national unity and put the country’s democracy at risk.

In a recent interview with BBC Hausa Service, Bafarawa expressed concern that opposition politics is gradually being pushed aside, saying this threatens Nigeria’s democratic future. The elder statesman, who recently quit partisan politics, said many politicians are joining the ruling party not out of love for the country, but to pursue personal gain.

“It’s disturbing how opposition parties are being weakened and absorbed into the ruling party for selfish reasons. This is not about the people—it’s about personal ambition,” he said.

He criticized northern political leaders in particular, accusing them of focusing on themselves while ignoring the welfare of the people they were elected to serve.

“Northern governors and politicians are only thinking of themselves. They’re not making real efforts to improve the lives of the people,” Bafarawa said.

As Nigeria faces serious social, political, and economic problems, the former governor said it is now up to the voters to reflect and make better choices. He urged Nigerians to use their votes wisely in the next general elections, adding that Nigeria’s democracy depends on citizens choosing competent and patriotic leaders.

“People can see how Nigeria is falling behind. This should help them vote more wisely next time,” he stated.

Although he’s retired from active politics, Bafarawa promised to continue lending his voice to national conversations, saying every Nigerian shares responsibility for the country’s challenges. He also stressed the need to protect opposition voices in Nigeria and revive a spirit of political patriotism in Nigeria to ensure progress and stability.
