Police Resume Tinted Glass Permit Issuance with NIN and TIN Verification, Gives a 30-Day Grace Perioid.

The Nigeria Police Force has officially resumed the tinted glass permit issuance in Nigeria through a newly improved digital platform. This system now includes checks using applicants’ National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN) to improve security and transparency.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 30, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police announced that the platform is now active following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Motorists can now apply for their permits by visiting www.possap.gov.ng. The new system captures biometric details and performs background checks. Once approved, successful applicants will receive QR-coded digital permits within 72 hours.

According to the Police, this digital upgrade addresses long-standing complaints from car owners who were often harassed by officers for using factory-fitted tinted windows. The aim is to create a clear, accessible way to regularize tinted vehicles while helping security agencies identify genuine users from potential criminal threats.

“The Nigeria Police Force has reactivated the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide through a secure and user-friendly platform,” the statement said. “Applicants can now process everything online, including identity verification via NIN and TIN.”

The tinted glass permit issuance in Nigeria was suspended in 2022 due to concerns that criminals were using tinted windows to commit crimes like kidnapping and robbery. But with reforms introduced in 2024 and a new secure system in place, the Police believe it’s now safer to bring back the service.

To ease the transition, a 30-day grace period has been given for all motorists to obtain valid permits before enforcement begins. The Police also warned that any officers found harassing or extorting motorists during this period will face disciplinary action.

The Inspector-General emphasized that the move is part of broader efforts to build a more technology-driven and people-focused police force.

As part of these efforts, the upgraded permit now features QR codes, serial numbers, and digital holograms to prevent forgery. All processes are in line with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991.

For those looking to regularize their tinted windows, the tinted glass permit issuance in Nigeria is now back — faster, more secure, and fully digital.
