Democracy Strong Under Tinubu, Says Presidency Amid Party Defections

The Presidency has reassured Nigerians that democracy remains strong and thriving under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, despite recent waves of political defections across the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, April 27, 2025, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasized that President Tinubu is a committed democrat and a firm believer in the multiparty democratic system.

“Under President Tinubu, democracy is strong, and the multiparty system will continue to flourish unhindered. His administration remains resolutely committed to upholding and strengthening the democratic foundations upon which our Fourth Republic has stood since 1999,” Onanuga said.

He noted that politicians switching party affiliations is not unusual and is a common feature even in advanced democracies. According to him, there are numerous examples worldwide of notable leaders who changed political parties without undermining the democratic process.

Onanuga praised President Tinubu and the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, for making the ruling party “viable and attractive” to Nigerians who wish to engage in the democratic space.

He highlighted Tinubu’s track record in strengthening democracy, recalling his historic role in building opposition coalitions that eventually unseated a sitting president in 2015.

“President Tinubu’s political activism and democratic credentials, especially in galvanizing and strengthening opposition platforms, attest to his profound credibility as a tested and relentless defender of multiparty democracy,” Onanuga said.

The Presidency urged Nigerians to continue supporting the government in protecting democracy, warning against the spread of “alarming narratives rooted in fiction.”

“We urge all Nigerians to join hands with the administration in protecting our democracy by respecting their choices and giving a wide berth to peddlers of alarming narratives rooted in fiction,” the statement added.
