Harvard Sues Trump Over Funding Cuts, Rejects Political Interference

Harvard University has taken legal action against former U.S. President Donald Trump, filing a lawsuit over what it describes as unfair federal funding cuts and political interference.

In the lawsuit, filed Monday in a Massachusetts federal court, the university accuses the Trump administration of trying to control its internal decisions by threatening to withhold federal money. The case claims the government’s actions go against the U.S. Constitution and existing federal laws.

According to Harvard, the issue began when Trump and his team accused the university of allowing anti-Semitic protests on campus, especially during demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza. Trump then froze $2.2 billion in federal funding, claiming Harvard refused to let the government oversee its admissions process, hiring practices, and political atmosphere.

The lawsuit argues that using funding as a tool to pressure universities is illegal and harmful to academic freedom. As Harvard sues Trump, the school is asking the court to lift the funding freeze, remove any political conditions on future grants, and have the government cover legal costs.

The Trump administration has defended its actions, saying they are a response to what it sees as rising anti-Semitism and a need to roll back diversity programs. Trump has also publicly criticized Harvard, calling it a “joke” and claiming it “teaches hate and stupidity.”

During last year’s protests, Harvard did take disciplinary action, placing 23 students on probation and blocking degrees for 12 others. But that hasn’t eased criticism from Trump, who says schools like Harvard should no longer receive federal support.

This case could set a major precedent for how much influence the government can have over universities. Many are watching closely, as the outcome could shape the future of higher education in America.
