Plateau Killings: Police Arrest Key Suspects Amid Curfew

In response to the ongoing Plateau killings, which have left over 100 people dead across multiple communities, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of two key suspects. The suspects were apprehended in connection with recent violent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area and are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

Reacting swiftly to the crisis, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced immediate security measures aimed at restoring order and preventing further bloodshed. In a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, the governor banned night grazing, restricted the use of motorcycles from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am, and prohibited the transportation of cattle by vehicle after 7:00 pm, all effective immediately.

“These steps are necessary to curb insecurity and reinforce vigilance in our communities,” the governor said while condemning the Plateau killings as “coordinated acts of terror” designed to displace indigenous people from their ancestral lands.

Over the past few days, communities in Kwall District of Bassa LGA and Bokkos LGA have suffered devastating attacks that left at least 103 people dead, hundreds injured, and scores of homes destroyed. Governor Mutfwang vowed that those behind the Plateau killings, along with their sponsors, would be brought to justice.

“To the killers and their sponsors—your evil shall not go unpunished. Plateau will rise, and Plateau will prevail,” he said.

Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the arrests in a statement and revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has deployed additional forces and resources to bolster security in the state. Aerial surveillance operations have begun in the most affected areas, including Bokkos and Bassa, while the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Kwazhi Yakubu, now leads law enforcement efforts on ground.

The governor has also directed hospitals to offer free medical treatment to all victims of the attacks. Relief materials, food supplies, and temporary shelters are being arranged for displaced families, while a special envoy on peace will begin grassroots consultations to foster reconciliation and intelligence sharing.

He further assured residents that President Bola Tinubu has pledged full federal support in addressing the crisis.

“The government is alive to its responsibility and is more determined than ever to protect lives and property,” Mutfwang declared.

The Plateau killings have drawn national condemnation. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, through its chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, described the attacks as tragic setbacks for a region that had recently experienced a return to relative peace.

“We urge community and religious leaders to stand with Governor Mutfwang in the interest of sustainable peace. The lives lost in these Plateau killings are not mere statistics—they were pillars of families and communities,” AbdulRazaq said.

As investigations continue, the police have urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security personnel, and report any suspicious activities.
