Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has demanded a ₦100 million compensation from the Nigerian Police Force over the unlawful arrest and detention of 17-year-old Alabi Quadri, a minor who gained national attention during the 2023 elections for standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy.
Quadri, who was recently cleared of armed robbery charges, had spent several months in Kirikiri Prison. His release came on Thursday, April 17, 2025, after Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi discharged him based on legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr. Babajide Martins, which stated that he had no case to answer.

Speaking to journalists after the court ruling in the Apapa area of Lagos, Effiong thanked the DPP for what he called a courageous and just decision. He described the case as an outrageous abuse of power, alleging that Quadri had been framed by local thugs (“Area Boys”) in his community who were envious of his public recognition and goodwill.
Effiong further demanded that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, and the Inspector General of Police take immediate action by:
- Removing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Amukoko Divisional Headquarters;
- Initiating orderly room trials against the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Odigbe Samuel, and all officers involved;
- Issuing a public apology to his client, Alabi Quadri.
He warned that if these demands were not met, he and a team of lawyers would pursue legal action to seek justice and compensation.
Effiong condemned the actions of the police, calling them a reflection of the deep-rooted corruption and injustice within the Nigerian justice system. “Quadri’s ordeal is not an isolated case. There are many young Nigerians unlawfully held in detention due to a broken system that allows for impunity and abuse of power, especially by those entrusted to uphold the law,” he said.
He concluded by stating, “History will vindicate the just.”
