Yahaya Bello Petitions IGP, Calls for Senator Natasha’s Prosecution Over Defamation Allegations

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for what he calls criminally defamatory statements made against him at a recent political rally.

The petition highlights Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s remarks at the ‘Homecoming Rally’ in Okehi LGA on April 1, 2025, which Bello’s legal team describes as false, reckless, and inciting. According to the petition, the senator accused Bello of involvement in a plot to assassinate her, linking him to a murder conspiracy intended to appear as ethnic violence.

Bello’s lawyers argue these claims are intended to damage his reputation, mislead the public, and incite ethnic and political tensions in Kogi Central. They insist the senator’s statements constitute criminal defamation and incitement to public disorder, referencing the Cybercrimes Act 2015 and relevant sections of the Penal Code.

The petition demands:

  • A formal retraction and public apology from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan
  • Publication of the retraction in two national newspapers
  • A commitment to stop making defamatory statements
  • Police action to arrest and prosecute if she fails to comply within 14 days

Bello’s legal team urged the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly, warning that without prosecution, others may feel encouraged to spread similar harmful claims.

So far, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has not responded to these allegations.
