The coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors for acting as spoilers and helping President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. The coalition claims these governors are blocking efforts to build a strong opposition against Tinubu by controlling the PDP and weakening its chances.
The dispute arose after the PDP Governors Forum opposed forming a broad coalition of opposition parties, which Atiku’s group supports as a way to challenge Tinubu and the ruling APC.

Coalition spokesman Salihu Lukman said the PDP has struggled for years and is no longer seen by Nigerians as a real alternative. He singled out Nyesom Wike, calling him an “untouchable” who works to stop the PDP from producing a strong presidential candidate to oppose Tinubu.
The coalition argues that the PDP governors are effectively helping Tinubu by preventing the party from uniting with others. Lukman called on all political actors, including PDP leaders, to join the coalition to save Nigeria’s democracy, which he says is at risk.
Besides Atiku, the coalition includes figures like Peter Obi, Nasir el-Rufai, and some former APC officials who have become disillusioned with the ruling party.
The coalition continues working to present a united front and hopes other politicians will join their efforts to strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
