Refund ₦300M or Face Legal Action – Rivers Government to NBA

Port Harcourt – The Rivers State Government has responded strongly to the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) decision to relocate the 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt to Enugu. The government rejected the NBA’s claim that the ₦300 million paid by Rivers State was a “gift” and unrelated to hosting rights.

In a statement signed by Hector Igbikiowubo, SSA Media, Rivers State Government, the Rivers State Government clarified that the ₦300 million payment was made with a clear and mutual understanding that Port Harcourt would host the NBA AGC 2025. The government stressed that this payment was intended to secure the hosting rights and expected the event to bring significant economic benefits to the state and its businesses.

“The NBA’s decision to move the AGC 2025 without consulting Rivers State and then refuse to refund the ₦300 million paid for the hosting rights is unethical and a breach of trust,” the government said in a statement.

The Rivers State Government warned that if the NBA does not promptly refund the ₦300 million, they will pursue all available legal options to recover the funds on behalf of the people of Rivers State.

While expressing readiness to continue constructive partnerships with professional bodies like the NBA, the government emphasized it will not tolerate exploitation of the state or its citizens.
