Tinubu Pushes for the transformation of National Open University to an online institution

President Bola Tinubu has called for full transformation of National Open University (NOUN)to an online institution , utilizing its expertise in open and distance learning. This directive aims to enhance the university’s delivery system by embracing technology to improve education access across Nigeria.

Speaking at the university’s 14th convocation in Abuja over the weekend, Tinubu, represented by Hajiya Rakiya Ilyasu, the Director of Universities Education in the Ministry of Education, expressed his belief in NOUN’s potential to shape the future of education in Nigeria. He stated, “The Federal Government remains committed to leveraging information technology to enhance learning and ensure it is inclusive and accessible.”

The President highlighted ongoing efforts to improve technology at NOUN, mentioning that the federal government is financing the installation of fibre optic infrastructure to provide reliable Internet access at study centers nationwide. This effort supports the transformation of National Open University to an online institution, ensuring that more students can benefit from distance learning.

Tinubu encouraged NOUN to lead the way in advancing digital learning across Africa. He pointed out that by fully embracing this transformation, NOUN can help tackle pressing educational challenges, such as access to quality education and high illiteracy rates, especially in rural areas.

“To achieve this vision, the leadership of NOUN must urgently develop a comprehensive roadmap for the transformation of National Open University to an online institution,” the President urged. This roadmap should include key phases, required infrastructure, and timelines for upgrading the learning management system. He emphasized the need to integrate emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality, to create interactive learning experiences.

During the convocation, it was reported that 17,420 students graduated from NOUN, including 10,967 undergraduates and 6,413 postgraduate students. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters, advised the graduates to uphold integrity and use their knowledge to positively impact society. He also encouraged them to stay connected with their alma mater and contribute to its growth.

Furthermore, Pro-Chancellor Isa Yuguda called for the inclusion of NOUN graduates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. The event also honored two notable figures: Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, and Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, with honorary degrees for their contributions to the country.

The President’s push for the transformation of National Open University to an online institution marks a significant effort to improve educational access and adapt to the changing landscape of learning in Nigeria.
