The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has officially announced that the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference will now take place in Enugu. This decision follows a shift away from Port Harcourt, which was initially set to host the event. The excitement surrounding the move has been amplified by the recent challenges in Rivers State, including a state of emergency that was declared on March 18, 2025.
Before the emergency was announced, members of the NBA were registering in large numbers, eager to attend the conference in Port Harcourt. However, the political climate in Rivers State has raised significant concerns. Currently, a retired military officer serves as the Sole Administrator, overseeing the state without adhering to constitutional processes or respecting the law. This has led to a governance style that many see as incompatible with democratic principles.

As the situation developed, many members began to voice their concerns, advocating for a change of venue for the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference. After meetings with branch chairmen from Rivers State and an emergency session of the National Executive Council (NEC) on March 27, 2025, a consensus emerged: it would not be appropriate to hold the conference in a location governed by such questionable authority.
The NEC pointed out that the state of emergency in Rivers State violates Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. Additionally, the removal of elected officials and suspension of democratic processes contradict constitutional provisions. The NEC emphasized that continuing with the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt would mean endorsing actions that undermine the rule of law.
In light of these circumstances, the NBA has made the principled decision to relocate the 2025 NBA Annual General Conference to Enugu, known as the Coal City, which has the necessary facilities and infrastructure to host such a significant event.
This move reflects the NBA’s commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring a successful conference. All members and stakeholders are urged to support this decision as the organization prepares for an impactful and successful 2025 NBA Annual General Conference.
