Akpabio Petitions IGP Demands Natasha’s Prosecution for Criminal Defamation

In his petition to the police, Akpabio stated, “I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.”

Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has formally asked the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate what he calls a false and malicious assassination claim by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. In a letter dated April 3, 2025, Akpabio accused the suspended Kogi Central Senator of making a criminally defamatory statement and demanded her prosecution.

This controversy started when Akpoti-Uduaghan made allegations during a homecoming event in Kogi State on April 1. She claimed that Akpabio directed former Governor Yahaya Bello and the current Governor Usman Ododo to plot her assassination, suggesting that the incident would be framed to look like her constituents were responsible for her death.

Akpabio strongly denied these allegations, describing them as “a heinous lie” and asserting that they were part of a calculated attempt to damage his reputation and incite political unrest. He emphasized that there is no evidence to support the assassination claim by Natasha, warning of the dangerous effects such statements could have on public peace.

In his petition to the police, Akpabio stated, “I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.” He accused her of manipulating public sentiment to tarnish his image and destabilize democratic institutions.

Concerns have been raised about the widespread media coverage of the assassination claim by Natasha, which has been broadcast across radio, television, and social media platforms. Akpabio called for urgent action from law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute Akpoti-Uduaghan for criminal defamation, incitement, and actions that could lead to a breach of public peace.
