The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, threatening to impose a “stiffer penalty” if he engages in actions that could undermine the party’s peace, unity, and integrity. This warning came during a meeting held on Monday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
The NEC, led by National Chairman Julius Abure, emphasized that they will not hesitate to take action against Obi if he is found culpable of jeopardizing the party’s values. “NEC in session, in exercise of its duties, hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace, unity, and integrity of the party,” the statement from Abure read.

During the meeting, the NEC also reviewed the performance of Honourable Victor Adam Ogene, the leader of the House of Representatives Caucus. They expressed concerns about his leadership, stating that the party’s voice is not being heard in the House and that there’s a lack of cohesion among party members. As a result, Ogene has been relieved of his leadership role due to “dereliction of duty.”
In his place, Hon. Barrister Ben Etanabene was appointed as the new Labour Party Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives. The NEC has tasked the National Working Committee (NWC) to communicate this decision to the relevant authorities and ensure Ogene hands over all party properties and financial contributions he holds to the party.
The NEC is determined to retrieve all belongings, including funds associated with the party, that Ogene has retained. They assured Nigerians that under the current leadership, the Labour Party is committed to providing effective governance and addressing issues such as security, economic growth, and a robust electoral system.
As such, the Abure-led NEC warns Peter Obi and emphasizes their dedication to maintaining a party that champions internal democracy and serves the interests of the Nigerian people.
