The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its invitation to Alhaji Sanusi regarding the violent incident during the Sallah celebration in Kano on March 30, 2025. Initially, the invitation aimed to gather Sanusi’s account of the events that led to the unrest.
Following advice from key stakeholders and a desire to avoid politicizing the matter, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) directed that the invitation be canceled. Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) will obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s statement in Kano.
Before the Sallah festivities, police received credible information that the two disputed Emirs in Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, were planning separate Durbar Festivals, which traditionally involve the Emir parading on horseback. To prevent violence, the IGP deployed Deputy Inspector-General Abubakar Sadiq to negotiate with both Emirs and the Kano State Government. They agreed that no Durbar Festival would take place to ensure public safety.

Despite this agreement, Alhaji Sanusi, after attending Eid Prayers, rode a horse in a procession, which led to clashes with local youths. Tragically, this confrontation resulted in the death of Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others. This situation was something the police had previously sought to prevent by warning both Emirs.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to a thorough investigation into the incident. The IGP emphasized that their actions are rooted in justice and professionalism. Alhaji Sanusi has now been invited to provide his statement, and the police will continue efforts to obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s statement in Kano as they work to bring those responsible to justice.
