FG Nabs 327 Illegal Mining Suspects, As Mining Marshals Recover 98 Sites In One Year

The Federal Government (FG) has announced the arrest of 327 suspects involved in illegal mining activities. This announcement coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Mining Marshals, a special force created to protect mining sites across Nigeria. In their first year, the Mining Marshals recovered 98 mining sites from illegal operators.

During a press briefing in Abuja on March 21, 2025, Dr. Dele Alake, the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, highlighted the success of the Mining Marshals in combating illegal mining. He mentioned that they have identified 457 additional suspected illegal mining sites through improved intelligence gathering.

Dr. Alake praised the Mining Marshals for their hard work and commitment over the past year. He announced plans to expand their coverage from 10 states to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. “The progress made in just one year is impressive,” he said. “This shows that you can take on more responsibility as you achieve results.”

He noted that the Mining Marshals have successfully taken illegal miners to court, ensuring some convictions. “The purpose of establishing the Mining Marshals has been fulfilled,” he added. “You are making significant strides toward addressing illegal mining in Nigeria.”

Dr. Alake also revealed that some high-profile individuals, including military officials and politicians, have been tied to illegal mining activities. He expressed confidence that the problems in the sector can be addressed, highlighting the successes achieved by the Mining Marshals in their first year.

He reported that since their activation a year ago, 2,670 officers have been deployed, with an additional 350 new recruits added this year. “The formation of the Mining Marshals has sent a clear message to illegal operators that their days are numbered,” he noted.

The Minister cited one case in Kogi State, where the Mining Marshals effectively chased away over 3,000 illegal miners. Other recovered sites include those operated by Ganan Mining Limited in the FCT and Jinloys Nigeria Limited in Abia State. The operations also led to the conviction of foreign illegal miners in Kwara State.

In a move to enhance their operations, Dr. Alake announced plans to integrate new technologies such as drones and satellite surveillance. “These advancements will provide both air and ground coverage for security in the solid minerals sector,” he stated.

The Minister expressed gratitude to security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and Navy, for training the Mining Marshals, as well as to the judiciary for their swift actions in prosecuting offenders. Additionally, he announced an award for the Best Report on Solid Minerals Development in Nigeria, aiming to promote responsible journalism in the sector.

As the Mining Marshals enter their second year, the FG reaffirms its commitment to combating illegal mining and increasing the contribution of solid minerals to national revenue.

The National Commandant of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commander Attah John Onoja, highlighted the role of the Ministry in establishing professional standards for the team. He acknowledged challenges such as dangerous terrains but reassured that the Mining Marshals remain dedicated to cleaning up the sector and responding to grievances from legitimate miners.

About 337 illegal mining suspects have been arrested nationwide, with 143 currently facing prosecution. The Mining Marshals are determined to safeguard Nigeria’s solid mineral resources and increase public awareness about the fight against illegal mining in Nigeria
