In a recent press release, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized the importance of respecting fundamental rights during pre-trial detentions.
He cautioned members of the Nigeria Police Force against incessant unlawful detentions in Nigeria and reminded them that following legally allowed detention periods is not just a legal requirement but also essential for maintaining the dignity and rights of individuals. This is outlined in Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of Nigeria, which guarantees personal liberty and dignity.
The IGP’s warning was shared by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on his verified X account. Egbetokun cautioned against any actions that could lead to unlawful or prolonged detentions, noting that such practices can erode public trust and confidence in the police.
