Court Blocks INEC from Accepting Petition for Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Federal High Court in Lokoja has issued an order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving or acting on any petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan until further notice.

The Federal High Court in Lokoja has issued an order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from receiving or acting on any petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan until further notice.

During a hearing on Thursday, the court granted an interim injunction that stops INEC and its staff from accepting any petitions that contain fake signatures from supposed members of the Kogi Central Senatorial District. This decision is in place while the court reviews an application related to the recall process against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The order was granted following an urgent application filed by Anebe Jacob Ogirima and four other registered voters from Kogi Central, who expressed concerns about the validity of the signatures on the petition. The application was represented by lawyer Smart Nwachimere from West-Idahosa, SAN & Co.

The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for May 6, 2025, to check on the service of the order and for further discussion on the matter.

This ruling comes amid growing tensions regarding the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as constituents raise questions about the legitimacy of the signatures being collected for this initiative. The situation remains under close observation as legal proceedings continue.
