Kenyan Senator Crystal Asige Stands by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in Her Sexual Harassment Case Against Akpabio

Senator Crystal Asige is shining a light on the sexual harassment case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and calling for broader reforms in African politics to protect and empower women and marginalized communities.

Kenyan Senator Crystal Asige has publicly supported Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in her sexual harassment case against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations are credible. During a press conference in Abuja, Asige emphasized that sexual harassment in African politics is a widespread problem that needs to be addressed.

Senator Asige called on African countries, especially Nigeria, to create special legislative seats for People Living With Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure better representation in governance. She highlighted that many women in politics face harassment, threats, and intimidation when trying to make their voices heard.

“I have followed your news keenly, and I see the challenges Senator Natasha is facing. It is unfortunate but not surprising. Women in politics across Africa continue to face harassment simply for daring to take up space,” Asige said. She represents special needs groups in Kenya’s Senate and has been vocal about the need for greater equity in politics.

Asige shared a personal story of being assaulted by a cab driver because of her visual impairment, illustrating the struggles faced by many marginalized individuals. “We are not just battling harassment or abuse; we are also battling the mindsets of those who perpetrate it,” she added.

She strongly encouraged Nigerian politicians to stand with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in her sexual harassment case against Akpabio, stating that it is essential for the political community to support her. “There are merits to the case that she has presented,” Asige stated.

The Kenyan senator also advocated for policies similar to Kenya’s affirmative action seats in both the National Assembly and the Senate. “This model should be replicated across Africa, particularly in Nigeria, which has a population of over 230 million people and at least 50 million living with disabilities,” she explained.

Asige warned that Africa is losing significant economic potential—about 10% of its annual GDP—due to the exclusion of PWDs and other marginalized groups from governance and social participation. “There is a strong business case for inclusion and diversity, not just a moral obligation,” she stated, urging policymakers to consider these factors.

Kudla Satumari, the founder of the Haske Satumari Foundation, echoed Asige’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for accountable and inclusive leadership in Africa to drive real change.

With her support, Senator Crystal Asige is shining a light on the sexual harassment case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and calling for broader reforms in African politics to protect and empower women and marginalized communities.
