Civil Servants Threaten Protests Over Rivers Budget Presentation Delay

A group of civil servants in Rivers State is threatening to organize mass protests due to the budget presentation delay in Rivers State.

They are criticizing the Rivers State House of Assembly for not receiving the state budget on time.

The coalition of concerned civil servants, along with the Rivers Solidarity for Good Governance, has issued a clear ultimatum to the state House of Assembly.

They are demanding that the 2025 budget be delivered from the executive branch by Wednesday, March 19, 2025.

At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, civil servant leader Opu-Oyibo Lilly-West condemned the budget presentation delay in Rivers State, stating that it has left many workers, market traders, and residents facing economic uncertainty.

Lilly-West expressed frustration, saying, “Your blatant disregard for the urgent needs of our state has placed critical contracts and salaries at risk.”

He continued, “By choosing spectacle over service, you have endangered the future of our public institutions and betrayed the trust of every citizen who depends on a stable, functioning government.”

The civil servants are demanding that the budget be submitted immediately and fully presented to the Assembly by the specified date, as requested by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. They insist that their demand is backed by the collective frustration of thousands of civil servants, their families, and the wider community.

The coalition warned that if their demands are not met, they will engage in large-scale protests, stating they will not tolerate any further delays or political games regarding the budget presentation delay in Rivers State.

“The tide of resistance will be unstoppable,” they declared. “The collective might of the civil service and the distressed voices of our people will rise in defiant protest against this gross negligence. This is not a threat—it is a promise of action.”

The groups called for an end to what they called “empty rhetoric” and urged the state assembly to fulfill its obligations by addressing the Rivers State budget presentation delay promptly.
