The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has commented on a situation involving a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who is facing threats over her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s government. According to the TUC, the government should be more tolerant of voices like hers amid growing public frustration.
Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, the NYSC member serving in Lagos, recently posted a TikTok video expressing her concerns about the difficulties Nigerians are experiencing due to the government’s economic policies. Her video gained significant attention and went viral, which led NYSC officials to allegedly contact her and threaten her to delete it. The NYSC has not yet provided an official statement regarding the matter.

TUC President Festus Osifo shared his views during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. He explained that the corps member’s comments stemmed from her frustration. He advised the government to refrain from targeting her and instead be tolerant of all critics.
“They need to understand that people are frustrated, hungry, and tired,” Osifo said. “If they express their frustrations, the government should not take it personally.” He emphasized that Raye the NYSC member like Ushie is not a threat to the government but is simply voicing her concerns.
Osifo further stated that the government must show patience and understanding, as many Nigerians are enduring challenging times. He added, “The government has to be more tolerant and resilient in the face of such expressions of frustration.”
Additionally, Amnesty International condemned the alleged threats made against the corps member, calling on the Federal Government to stop intimidating individuals who criticize its actions. They stated, “Holding and voicing dissenting views is not a crime.”
The call for tolerance regarding the viral corps member, Ushie Uguamaye, reflects the wider sentiment that many Nigerians are feeling as they navigate through difficult economic conditions.
