Criminals Now Wear Royal Crowns: Obasanjo Warns of Decline in Traditional Rulership

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over the decline of traditional rulership in Nigeria, noting that criminals, drug addicts, and bandits are now being recognized as traditional leaders. He shared these views in his new book, “Nigeria: Past and Future,” which was launched last week.

Obasanjo stated that the selection process for traditional rulers has deteriorated significantly, leading to the appointment of individuals who lack the necessary training and moral integrity. He highlighted an incident where a traditional ruler was caught trying to snatch a ballot box at a polling station.

According to Obasanjo, the erosion of traditional institutions has contributed to Nigeria’s socio-political issues. “Today, there are criminals, drug addicts, vagabonds, bandits, and kidnappers being called traditional rulers,” he said. “Instead of being custodians of culture and justice, some of these leaders have engaged in disgraceful acts, which only worsen the country’s problems.”

Reflecting on the past, he lamented the loss of respect for traditional rulership in Nigeria, especially during the colonial and early post-independence periods. “The respected class of traditional rulers has been diluted and polluted,” he said.

Obasanjo called for urgent reforms in how traditional rulers are selected to restore their dignity and value. He stressed that traditional rulers should be valuable contributors to national development rather than burdens. “The dignity and respect that once defined traditional rulership in Nigeria should be brought back,” he stated.

He emphasized the need for moral rejuvenation among traditional rulers, particularly those with deep historical significance. “If traditional rulers are properly repositioned, they can play a crucial role in achieving Nigeria’s long-term aspirations,” Obasanjo concluded.
