Kano Government Clarifies Appeal Court Ruling on Sanusi-Bayero Emirship Tussle

The court's stay of execution does not nullify its judgment from January 10, 2025, which upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, thereby reinstating Sanusi II.

The Kano State Government has clarified the recent Court of Appeal ruling regarding the ongoing Sanusi-Bayero emirship tussle, assuring residents that the appeal process does not invalidate the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

At a press briefing in Kano, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, addressed concerns about claims that the Court of Appeal’s ruling had been overturned. He affirmed that the court’s stay of execution does not nullify its judgment from January 10, 2025, which upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, thereby reinstating Sanusi II.

“The Court of Appeal’s stay of execution is standard judicial procedure. It does not overturn the court’s ruling but maintains the status quo until the Supreme Court delivers its final verdict,” Dederi explained.

The legal battle originates from an appeal lodged at the Supreme Court by Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan’Agundi, a prominent supporter of the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. Despite this ongoing Sanusi-Bayero emirship tussle, the Kano State Government has reassured residents that the reinstatement of Sanusi II remains intact.

“The judgment of the Court of Appeal is still standing and subsisting. Only the Supreme Court has the power to overturn it,” Dederi emphasised, urging the public to dismiss any misleading narratives suggesting that the emirship ruling had been nullified.

The government expressed concern over false reports causing confusion among residents and called for law-abiding behavior amid the legal proceedings. Dederi highlighted their commitment to due process, stating, “Our legal team is carefully reviewing the latest ruling to determine the next course of action.”

As the Sanusi-Bayero emirship tussle unfolds, the Kano State Government reassured the public of its dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
