Natasha-Akpabio Alleged harassment: Akpabio, Natasha, Others to Appear Before Senate Committee

According to Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will be summoned before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions (SCEPPP) to address allegations of sexual harassment. This development follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims that Akpabio harassed her during a visit to his residence in December 2023.

Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that during her visit with her husband to Akpabio’s home in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, the Senate President engaged in inappropriate behavior, including holding her hand, leading her around his house, and making unwelcome advances in her husband’s presence. These allegations have sparked significant interest and concern among lawmakers and constituents alike.

Nwebonyi stated, “All the parties involved would appear before the Committee, including the Senate President. He would come and testify, and his testimony would be recorded, likewise other senators.” He emphasized that other lawmakers would provide their accounts and insights regarding the Natasha – Akpabio alleged harassment case.

However, Nwebonyi defended Akpabio, suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusations serve as a distraction, claiming, “In criminal prosecution, there is what we call prima facie evidence—evidence on the surface. If there is no prima facie evidence, then there is no case.”

He continued, asserting, “She knows quite well that what she is saying is to divert attention, but we are not disturbed because we know the truth. On the alleged date of the incident, many senators were present. I am one of the star witnesses, and I will come and tell the world what I saw.”

The upcoming Senate Committee session aims to delve into the details of the allegations and clarify the circumstances surrounding the Natasha – Akpabio alleged harassment claims, as both sides prepare to present their testimonies.
