Wike: “Heaven Will Not Fall If Fubara Is Impeached”

Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated that it is perfectly acceptable for lawmakers to remove Fubara over alleged impeachable offenses, including the delay in paying their salaries for months.

Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has declared that there will be no major consequences if the House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, decides to impeach current Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking at a media event in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated that it is perfectly acceptable for lawmakers to remove Fubara over alleged impeachable offenses, including the delay in paying their salaries for months.

Wike said, “If you have committed an offense that warrants impeachment, what’s the problem? It’s part of the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?”

He dismissed concerns that impeaching Fubara would lead to a breakdown of law and order, stating, “Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

Wike also commented on the actions of the Amaewhule-led Assembly, noting that if they were not open to peace, they could have taken a six-month break following the Supreme Court ruling. He criticized a letter sent by Fubara to the Assembly, suggesting the governor could have handled the situation better.

On February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court made significant rulings regarding the political landscape in Rivers State. The court rejected Fubara’s appeal against the legitimacy of the assembly headed by Amaewhule and ordered him to resume working immediately with the other elected members.

Additionally, the court prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria and other authorities from releasing funds to Rivers State until it complies with court orders. It also declared the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, invalid.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Fubara announced that he would adhere to the court’s rulings and instructed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to prepare for new elections.

The electoral commission has scheduled the fresh local government elections for August 9, 2025. Furthermore, the Assembly issued an arrest warrant for the RSIEC Chief, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), due to his failure to appear before the House.

The Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, also reached out to the Assembly in a letter on March 7, 2025, to request a meeting to discuss presenting the 2025 budget and potential peace talks. However, the Assembly responded by directing the governor to submit his invitation properly.
