To Restore Peace in Rivers State, President Tinubu Urges Respect for Rule of Law

The President acknowledged the Niger Delta’s vital role in Nigeria’s economy, referring to it as “the goose that lays the golden egg

President Bola Tinubu has called for respect for the rule of law to bring lasting peace and prosperity to Rivers State. He made this statement during a meeting with political leaders from the South-South region in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking to representatives of the Niger Delta under the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), President Tinubu stressed the importance of honoring judicial decisions to uphold democracy and promote harmony in the region. He encouraged leaders to think broadly and work selflessly for the greater good of the area’s political and economic future.

“I am here by the grace of God, appreciating your support, prayers, and concern. I cannot complain. I campaigned for this position and begged for the job. I must do it with all my heart, whatever it takes,” he said.

President Tinubu mentioned that he has been aware of the ongoing issues in Rivers State and has already taken steps to address them. He urged stakeholders to make sacrifices and respect the Constitution to help the state move forward.

“This is a nation governed by the rule of law. I have total confidence in our judiciary. Once the court has spoken, that is it,” he stated. He asked the leaders to help implement court rulings quickly and to promote peace and stability in the region.

The President also highlighted his commitment to community development and projects that benefit citizens. “Go back home and take charge of peace. If you need me, let me know. The people of Rivers State will not suffer because of democracy,” he assured.

He praised the leadership within the Niger Delta and recognized the efforts of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the leader of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for his work in the region.

King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, co-chairman of the PANDEF Board of Trustees, thanked President Tinubu for his dedication to the South-South and expressed confidence in his leadership.

Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Obong Victor Attah called for more attention to the political crises in Rivers State, stating that instability there could affect national peace.

The PANDEF delegation included former governors, legislators, ministers, traditional leaders, and representatives from youth and women’s groups.
