Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president and 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected recent rumors claiming he plans to leave the party.
In a statement released on Saturday, Atiku emphasized his commitment to building a strong coalition of opposition parties aimed at challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Speculation about Atiku’s potential defection surfaced recently, with reports suggesting he was considering a switch to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as he prepares for the 2027 race.

However, Atiku’s media office swiftly dismissed these claims. The statement unequivocally stated that he remains a “bonafide member” of the PDP, calling the defection rumors a “complete fallacy” lacking any credible foundation.
“We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic,” stated the press release, signed by his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe.
The statement further highlighted Atiku’s ongoing efforts to unite opposition parties in Nigeria, asserting that this coalition is essential to removing the “incompetent and pain-inflicting” APC from power by 2027, and providing Nigerians with a “new lease of life.”
Atiku’s unwavering commitment to the PDP and his vision for a united opposition have gained attention as he prepares for the electoral battle ahead.
