The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has announced that federal workers will experience salary deductions because of overpayments made in December 2024 due to a system error.
In a statement released on Friday by Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations, the OAGF explained that it is currently recovering these overpayments through deductions from the salaries of affected workers.
The OAGF clarified that there were no shortfalls in the salaries paid to federal workers in January and February 2025. The amounts received during these months reflected normal salaries after the payment of various arrears in the last quarter of 2024.

Workers had received additional payments for minimum wage adjustments, as well as 25% and 35% salary increases, between October and December 2024. These extra payments temporarily raised salaries, leading some workers to mistakenly believe their January and February salaries were reduced.
“Normal salary payments resumed in January 2025 after the arrears were paid, which caused some workers to think they were shortchanged, when in fact, they were receiving their actual salaries,” the statement noted. The OAGF assured that salaries paid in January and February 2025 would remain the same until any future reviews by the Federal Government.
Regarding the overpayments from December 2024, the OAGF confirmed that the system error has been fixed and that deductions are ongoing to recover the excess payments.
The statement explained, “There were cases of overpayments in December 2024 due to a system error. This has been corrected, and deductions will continue until the overpayments are fully recovered.”
On the matter of promotion arrears, the OAGF stated that a Standing Committee on Promotion and Salary Arrears manages this process. This committee compiles and reviews salary and promotion arrears from various government agencies before sending them to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System for payment.
The OAGF reported that batches 1 to 6 of the promotion arrears payments have been fully processed, and additional payments are pending approval from the Budget Office.
