Rivers Electoral Body Sets Local Government Elections for August 9

This upcoming election comes during a time of increased political tension in the state, as the Supreme Court ruling has nullified the terms of previously elected local government officials.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that fresh local government elections will take place on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that invalidated the previous elections held on October 5, 2024.

Justice Adolphus Enebeli, the Chairman of RSIEC, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. He explained that the new date is in line with the Supreme Court’s judgment issued last Friday, which voided the previous polls conducted by the commission.

Enebeli stated, “Based on the powers given to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission by Section 5 of the RSIEC Law No. 2 of 2018, we are providing guidelines for political parties, detailing the rules and procedures for election campaigns.”

He confirmed that the local government council elections will be held in all 23 local government areas of Rivers State.

This upcoming election comes during a time of increased political tension in the state, as the Supreme Court ruling has nullified the terms of previously elected local government officials.
