Breaking: 35 Lagos Lawmakers Show Up in Court for Meranda — Photos Inside!

Thirty-five lawmakers from the Lagos State House of Assembly, who support Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker, have arrived at the Lagos State High Court for a hearing related to his case. Obasa is challenging his removal by at least 36 of his colleagues, which took place on January 13, 2025, while he was out of the country.

In a court application dated February 12, 2025, filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa claims that his removal was improper.

The legal team for Speaker Mojisola Meranda and the House includes lead counsel Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) and several other prominent lawyers, such as Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) and Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN). As of the time of this report, the lawmakers were seated and ready for the hearing to begin.

In a separate development, the House condemned what it called an invasion that occurred on Thursday. They reported that Obasa, along with three members, attempted to hold an unsanctioned plenary session.

The Lagos state House stated, “A valid sitting requires a formal notice to all members, a quorum, an approved agenda, and the mace—none of which were present during the session.” With only five out of 40 members in attendance, they deemed the attempt unconstitutional.

In a statement by spokesman Hon. Steve Ogundipe, the House emphasized its commitment to maintaining high parliamentary standards and upholding the integrity of the legislature. They reiterated their support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, stating, “Any speculation about her resignation is unfounded. She remains in office and has the confidence of 36 colleagues.”

The House also expressed its intention to work with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resolve misunderstandings and continue serving the interests of Lagosians.
