Kabiru Alhassan Rurum Kano Lawmaker Rejects Suspension, Claims Loyalty to a Different NNPP Faction

Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, the representative for Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, has responded to his suspension from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano, characterizing it as a baseless action and an act of contempt of court. The suspension was announced by Kano NNPP Chairman Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, but Rurum maintains that he and his colleagues remain aligned with a different faction of the party.

Denial of Allegiance to Faction

In his statement, Rurum emphasized that he and his allies do not support the faction that altered the party’s logo, asserting their identification with the NNPP faction that features the fruit and basket logo, as opposed to the book logo adopted by others. “The world knows that since they changed the party’s logo, we have not been with them,” Rurum declared. He also referenced a court judgment that dismissed claims made by the opposing faction, reinforcing his position.

Contempt of Court Allegations

Rurum accused the Kano NNPP leadership of defying legal rulings, stating, “What they did is a contempt of court. They are not legitimate party leaders.” He noted ongoing legal disputes, mentioning that after a recent victory for his faction, the opposing party took the matter to an Abia High Court and that they were in court again the previous week. “They are deceiving Nigerians,” he added.

Connection to Recent Wedding Controversy

Linking his suspension to the recent wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter, Rurum suggested that the real issue troubling the NNPP leadership is the event. He mentioned that prominent Nigerians attended the wedding and claimed that party leaders, including national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were invited but declined to attend. “This shouldn’t even be politicized,” he cautioned.

Rurum further dismissed the significance of his suspension, asserting that his faction operates independently of the party leadership. “Everybody in this country knows we are on two different lanes. They have only suspended themselves because we are not with them,” he insisted.

Continued Division Within the NNPP

His comments underscore the escalating rift within the NNPP, marked by ongoing legal battles and deepening political tensions between factions. As both sides continue to assert their legitimacy, the divide within the party appears poised to grow further.
