The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing the Kano South Senatorial district, citing alleged anti-party activities and his connections with Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The suspension also extends to three other party members: Ali Madakin Gini, Sani Abdullahi Rogo, and Kabiru Alhassan Rurum. This decision was announced by the NNPP leadership in Kano State on Sunday.
Violation of Party Principles
At a press conference in Kano, Hashimu Dungurawa, chairman of the NNPP’s Kano State chapter, expressed that the suspended members had breached party principles by engaging in actions inconsistent with the party’s ideology. “These individuals were elected into the National Assembly under the NNPP platform, yet they have chosen to betray the trust placed in them by the party,” Dungurawa stated. He emphasized that their actions contradicted the core tenets of the NNPP, leaving the leadership with no choice but to impose disciplinary measures.
Condemnation of Alleged Disloyalty
Dungurawa specifically criticized Senator Kawu for his perceived disloyalty, noting that the NNPP had previously provided him and the other suspended members with complimentary tickets during the last elections. He expressed disappointment that, despite this support, they chose to align themselves with opposition figures. “What is even more shocking is that key members of the APC were invited to Senator Kawu’s daughter’s wedding and the commissioning of some of his projects in Sumaila Local Government Area. This is a clear indication of where his loyalty lies,” Dungurawa added.

Possibility of Reconciliation
Despite the suspensions, Dungurawa indicated a willingness for reconciliation. He stated that if the suspended members acknowledge their mistakes and seek forgiveness, the party may reconsider its decision. “If they realize their errors and come back to the party with genuine remorse, we will consider reinstating them,” he said.
Awaiting Response from Suspended Members
As of the latest updates, Senator Kawu Sumaila and the other suspended members have not publicly responded to the allegations or the party’s decision regarding their suspension.
