The Federal Government has called on retailers to pass on the recent decrease in food prices to consumers and to refrain from exploiting them.
Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, made this announcement on Tuesday at the 2025 Wheat Farmers Green Field Day, held in Dabi village, located in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa.
He expressed strong criticism of retailers who exhibited a flagrant disregard for declining sales and falling prices. He considered this attitude to be not only unpatriotic but also entirely unacceptable.
The federal government is cognizant of the substantial decline in food prices across major markets, especially for essential commodities like flour, sugar, rice, and pasta.
It is truly concerning that numerous retailers, bakers, and shop owners have chosen not to pass on this price reduction to consumers, effectively denying Nigerians the relief they rightfully deserve.

In recent months, stakeholders throughout the retail value chain expressed concerns regarding the escalating prices of food items. However, there has been a positive shift, as prices have now decreased significantly. For instance, the cost of flour has plummeted from N81,000 per bag to under N60,000, while spaghetti has seen a reduction from N20,000 to N15,000.
“It is only fair and just that consumers be allowed to benefit from the reduction in food prices,” Kyari stated.
He underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring food availability and working in partnership with relevant stakeholders to effectively tackle the current market challenges. This event was organized in collaboration with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, the federal government, and the Jigawa State government.
