Lagos Assembly Suspends Plenary Indefinitely After Security Officers’ Breach

Chaos Erupted During Monday’s Assembly when security personnel, reportedly from the State Security Service (SSS), entered the Deputy Speaker’s office and locked the door just minutes before the plenary session was to begin. This provocative action ignited a heated confrontation between the lawmakers and the security officers, but the lawmakers ultimately succeeded in regaining access to the office.

Lawmaker Kehinde Joseph representing  Alimosho I constituency strongly condemned the presence of armed SSS officials, expressing disbelief that security operatives took control of the chambers upon their arrival.

“It is unacceptable that DSS officials invaded our chambers with firearms. This is an attack on democracy, and we will not allow it to go unchallenged,” he asserted.

Stephen representing the Mushin I constituency emphasized that any harm to lawmakers or staff would be the responsibility of the SSS. “I am deeply troubled that the democracy we fought for is being disrespected in this manner. If anything occurs here, the DSS will be held accountable,” he declared.

In the midst of the controversy, SSS officials issued an unsigned statement claiming they were invited by the assembly’s management to maintain order, accompanied by a copy of the invitation letter from the acting clerk. However, videos obtained by THE NATION DIGEST clearly show lawmakers actively resisting the presence of SSS officials in the assembly.

Lagos Assembly also passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who was visibly moved to tears as they chanted songs of solidarity.

Meanwhile, former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed while abroad during recess, maintains that he is the rightful speaker and has sought legal recourse through a suit filed by his attorney, Afolabi Fashanu.
