Epidural anesthesia is a common pain relief method used during childbirth, involving an injection in the spine to block pain signals. While it can provide significant relief during labor, there are potential dangers and long-term side effects that some women may experience,
Fashion and beauty entrepreneur Toyin Lawani recently shared her experience with epidural anesthesia, which is commonly used to relieve pain during childbirth. In a video posted online, the mother of three expressed that since receiving the injection, she has not felt like herself.
Lawani criticized doctors for not fully disclosing the long-term side effects of epidurals. She has been experiencing severe back pain and spinal degeneration since receiving the anesthetic during the births of her last two children.
She stated, “When you hear ‘epidural,’ run. Doctors mention side effects but not the long-term impacts on your body. I know three friends who have similar issues. At just 42, I’m facing spine problems. I have a degenerating spine, implants, and I sometimes struggle to stand or breathe properly due to the effects of the surgery.
“They don’t inform you because you just want the pain to go away. I had two epidurals; my first was for a natural birth, but the last two were due to surgery, leaving me with no choice.
“The pain persists. My back is excruciating, and my spine continues to degenerate.”
Pregnant women need to discuss the potential risks and benefits of epidurals with their healthcare provider, considering their individual medical history and circumstances.
