Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has criticized Nigerians for speaking out against corruption but often supporting corrupt individuals during their trials.
During a meeting with officials from the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) in Abuja, Olukoyede emphasized that corruption is the main obstacle to Nigeria’s development. He said, “Corruption and financial crimes are major issues that can hinder progress if not addressed.”
He reiterated that fighting corruption is a shared responsibility among all citizens and stressed that real advancement requires a commitment to honesty and accountability.
Olukoyede pointed out the conflicting attitudes in society: while many complain about corruption, they still back corrupt leaders who are being investigated. “People show concern about corruption but support those under investigation,” he said. “This inconsistency weakens our efforts to fight corruption, which should involve everyone working together.”
He assured that the EFCC is committed to addressing financial crimes in a lawful manner and encouraged greater public involvement in the anti-corruption movement. The agency plans to work with the CCC to improve communication strategies and raise awareness about integrity and accountability.
