Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives has firmly criticized Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for his betrayal and lack of gratitude towards Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Amidst the intensifying rivalry between Mohammed and Wike, marked by public spats and counter-allegations, Dogara has weighed in with his statement.
Wike’s media adviser, Lere Olayinka, has recently denounced Mohammed’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms, describing it as misguided. In response, Mohammed has characterized Wike as a “transactional politician” who shifts allegiances for personal benefit.
In a statement titled “Let the Truth Be Told,” Dogara detailed how Wike allegedly financed Mohammed’s 2019 gubernatorial campaign and played a crucial role in preserving his political career. He remarked, “Remaining silent on this issue would equate to complicity. This is not merely about defending Wike, but about conveying the truth as I understand it.
“During the 2018 PDP primaries, when we questioned Mohammed’s ability to overcome Senator Abdul Ningi, we sought Wike’s assistance. He appointed Chief Dan Orbih as the chairman of the primaries panel and arranged for a private jet for our travel to Bauchi, covering all expenses unconditionally.”
Dogara disclosed that following Mohammed’s selection as the PDP candidate, his financial difficulties became apparent, necessitating further appeals to Wike. “When Bala committed to funding all party candidates, we were unaware of his financial limitations. A fundraiser at Sheraton Hotel netted only N28 million after expenses, compelling us to seek Wike’s assistance.
“We traveled to Port Harcourt to meet Wike without informing him of Bala’s attendance. Initially displeased due to past grievances, Wike ultimately forgave Mohammed after he acknowledged his errors and requested forgiveness,” Dogara recounted.
He emphasized that Wike not only provided financial support but also logistical assistance, including a private jet to facilitate the launch of Mohammed’s campaign. Dogara accused the governor of repaying Wike’s generosity with betrayal. “Wike provided financial resources and even arranged our transportation back to Abuja. His support was not a singular act; he assisted Bala multiple times without expecting anything in return. Yet, Bala has betrayed him, affirming Wike’s warning that he would come to regret his assistance.”
Dogara underscored Mohammed’s history of betrayal, referencing his conflicts with political mentors such as elder statesman Bello Kirfi. He concluded, “Bala Mohammed’s record of betrayal is widely recognized. When Wike supported him, he extolled him as ‘focused, courageous, and determined.’ Now he disparages the very individual who rescued him from political obscurity—this is a regrettable act of ingratitude.”
