Don’t Leave Water Bottles in Your Car.

If you have a basic understanding of physics, you may know that sunlight can penetrate a plastic bottle filled with water. This setup functions similarly to a magnifying glass, concentrating the light onto a specific focal point. If this point is made of a combustible material, like a fabric car seat, it can generate enough heat to ignite a fire.

Around the world, there have been reports of vehicles igniting due to the seemingly innocuous act of leaving a water bottle in a hot car. In one notable incident, a firefighter from Idaho left a bottle in his vehicle. Upon returning, he was struck by a plume of smoke and quickly discovered that the seat was smoldering. This alarming occurrence was a result of light being concentrated through the bottle. Fortunately, he was able to extinguish the flames swiftly, preventing any further damage.

How You Can Prevent Fires

Fire safety officials have provided a few safety measures that you can follow:

  • Never, ever leave plastic water bottles in your car! The scorching heat can cause harmful chemicals to leach into the water, putting your health at risk. Protect yourself and make a conscious choice for your well-being!
  • If you do have to leave one inside, find a shaded area, even if it’s under a seat.
  • Use insulated or opaque bottles to avoid allowing light to pass through.
