“When I See Rice, Beans Coming Down Below The Minimum Wage, Then We Begin To Say Yes” – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, who previously ran for president under the Labour Party banner, has cast doubt on the federal government’s ambitious plan to reduce Nigeria’s inflation rate from 34% to 15%. During a recent press interaction, the former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for concrete actions rather than mere projections.

“This is not the first time he’s coming out with such optimism,” Obi stated, questioning the government’s forecast. “The reality is that while we expect 100 percent result, we want to see 100 percent effort.”

In his analysis, Obi pointed to food costs as the primary driver of inflation in Nigeria. He argued that public confidence in government policies would only be restored when essential food items become affordable within the constraints of the current minimum wage.

“I’ll wait and see how inflation will come down from 34% to 15% because the main drive of inflation, as we know, is food. When I see rice, beans coming down below the minimum wage, then we begin to say yes,” he observed.

The former governor also addressed the persistent issue of excessive government spending, noting that while multiple administrations have promised to reduce governance costs, these pledges rarely materialize into meaningful change. He emphasized that effective governance should be evaluated based on its tangible impact on citizens’ daily lives.

“It’s not something you say; it’s what you do and what people feel. Governance is about the feeling of the people, not you,” Obi concluded, stressing the importance of practical results over theoretical plans.
